During the early 1920’s, there were no apostolic churches existing in the Fort Wayne area. Then, in 1928, a minister by the name of Thomas Jones began a church that would come to serve as the predecessor to what is now known as Christ Temple Church of Fort Wayne, Inc. However, the church had to close its doors by the beginning of the 1930’s.

It wasn’t until June 6, 1932, under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, that Elder and Mother Luther Gray came from Muncie, Indiana, for the sole purpose of establishing an apostolic church. Nearly one month later, on July 4, 1932, the first service was held at 1348 Hayden Street in a rented building, commonly called a "storefront". It was at this place that the city’s first apostolic church was birthed.

In that same meeting, Henry Jones and his wife, Helen, were immediately convicted and desired to learn more about holiness and the apostolic way. Eight days later on July 12, 1932, both were baptized in Jesus’ name and filled with the gift of the Holy Ghost. Unbeknownst to members attending that day, the salvation of these two people, would come to mark a historical turning point in the ministry of Christ Temple Church for years to come.

The original church consisted of only eight members, and later that year, they moved to 1412 South Hanna Street and saw an increase in membership. During the spring of 1933, the church had outgrown that building and purchased property at 1350 Hayden Street.

In the year of 1934, Brother Henry Jones was called into the ministry. He also became the first Assistant Pastor under Elder Luther Gray. Ten years later, in 1944, Elder Gray was "called home to Glory" and Minister Henry Jones was installed as the Pastor. Under the new leadership, membership continued to grow and it soon became necessary to move into a larger edifice. The church’s current site, 1327 Winter Street, was then purchased.

On October 8, 1949 construction began and was completed within the year. The church was dedicated on October 7, 1950. Bishop Karl F. Smith, President of Aenon Bible School of Columbus, conducted the dedication services. The newly completed church cost the Christ Temple congregation more than $120,000. This was an amazing feat to be accomplished by African-Americans in that day. Moreover, as a member of the Indiana Apostolic Bible Students Association (ABSA) Council of the Pentecostal Assemblies of the World, Inc., Christ Temple was the first church within the ABSA Council to have an air-conditioned sanctuary and to use glass doors in the vestibule entrance. Pastor Jones and the congregation made great sacrifices to finance the building of this monumental church in the heart of the "central city".

In 1987, after serving 43 years as Pastor, the now District Elder Henry W. Jones stepped down gracefully and retained the honorable title of Pastor Emeritus until his death in August 1996. In August 1987, the church’s current Pastor, Suffragan Bishop Elbert C. Haywood, returned to Indiana from Miami, Florida to serve as Pastor Elect. In November of 1987, the late Bishop Charles Watkins officially installed Pastor Haywood and anointed him to carry the mantle into the next generation of leadership.

Since that time, the church has seen enormous growth, both spiritually and naturally. Christ Temple Church remains the largest and oldest apostolic church in the Fort Wayne area and serves as the Mother Church to 6 other apostolic works that have been birthed out of the ministry.

Newsflash

Yesterday all servers in the U.S. went out on strike in a bid to get more RAM and better CPUs. A spokes person said that the need for better RAM was due to some fool increasing the front-side bus speed. In future, buses will be told to slow down in residential motherboards.
